At least thirteen individuals killed and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in Mexico.
A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key government projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” stated the head of state.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term ended the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in national infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked significant questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an prompt suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."
In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
