Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and handed Everton their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced twice from corners in the first half to put their strong form at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent stops to guarantee Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to check the goal on the screen and the official decided that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves the manager's side up to third in the division, five points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and are half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in role at both ends of pitch

After a uninspiring midweek display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a only two shots on target, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's absence - notched his second in first-half stoppage time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defensive duties, combining well with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have faded somewhat and fans flocked to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a major concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of established centre-forwards - had scored only a single goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

Beto's form was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, despite having space and time to reposition for a simpler shot that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, too, was unable to influence the game after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly delivered threatening balls into the Spurs box.
